The Calligraphic Arts Guild of Toronto (CAGT) was founded in 1974 by Alf Ebsen and incorporated as a not-for-profit organization in 1975. A resident group at NPCC for about 20 years, CAGT has continued to provide opportunities for the study of calligraphy, its history, cultural tradition and application for all ages through members’ meetings, classes, workshops and exhibitions.

Our meetings offer a variety of educational and hands-on activities related to the calligraphic arts, including guest speakers, artist demonstrations and opportunities to practice with experienced instructors. We work with all types of lettering arts and materials from gouache to gold while learning about calligraphic history, design, decorated letters and more. In addition, our courses and workshops occasionally offer internationally known instructors. For inquiries about programming, please email CAGT directly at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
Membership is open to all, regardless of calligraphic ability. The year runs from September to August and the annual fee is only $135.00 which includes the NPCC Standard Membership of $110.00. Members enjoy access to Guild classes and workshops at a reduced rate, library resources, CAGT exhibitions and NPCC privileges such as discounts at certain stores and art galleries. The annual fee is payable to NPCC. Sign up for NPCC and CAGT membership here.
Unable to join as a Guild member? Friends of the CAGT is a membership option. Friends can take Guild classes at a reduced rate and join the CAGT on events off the premises of NPCC. Funds support CAGT’s ongoing efforts to heighten awareness of the calligraphic arts. The yearly fee to be a Friend of the CAGT is only $30.
