And now, she picks up the pieces

And now, she picks up the pieces visualizes constructed and fragmented memories. A key component to childhood recollection, archival familial media, specifically photographs, constructs a biased look into a specific moment of time, only able to refer to the confines of its frame, omitting the context of the image. Like memory, only certain “facts” can be stored leaving the mind to fill in the blanks of the moment. Through photography, one can reconstruct a moment, an event or an entire narrative seemingly recalling the memory but, ultimately, rebuilding one. In this body of work, Dyer looks to insert herself back into the narrative of her own childhood, piecing the fragments of time back together, reconstructing a childhood memory with the consciousness of an adult.
This memory, now constructed in the psyche, creates a life of its own, transporting the photographic image into an event imprinted onto the mind. Here, the mind is represented by raw canvas, malleable, vulnerable and easy to stain. As the paint soaks into the canvas fibers, it becomes one with the material, ultimately producing an object from the image. The memory, as represented by the object, now takes up its own space, not only in the mind, but also in reality, creating a new narrative surrounding the life of the piece itself.
