Steve Rose says:Â “This work and this exhibit, which was first mounted for my MFA thesis, have been an attempt to acknowledge and explore death, not by diminishing its impact nor dwelling on the morbid, but rather by working toward an acceptance of the fact that we all will die. Death is inevitable, and it can bring overwhelming grief, devastating shock, and set in motion painful mourning – which can be arduous.
Through this journey to acceptance and deep exploration of death, grief, and mourning, I also have come to embrace the idea of Memento Vitae: the importance of celebrating life. Of living with intention and love, while remembering and respecting those who have gone before. In that sense, my Memento Mori is also a Memento Vitae.”
Steve is a graduate of Ontario College of Art and Design with a major in drawing and painting. He has exhibited his work in over 70 shows and has a diverse and experienced background as an artist/educator. His work is collected in private and corporate international collections. There are three main areas of interest to the artist: non-objective painting, life drawing, and printmaking (generally in the medium of lithography).
In addition to active independent studio practice, Steve enjoys teaching and lecturing on art and art history and constantly taking workshops such as his life drawing sessions every Wednesday evening for the past 17 years. Steve is also involved in mentoring less experienced artists and various artistic collaborations.
