Position Title: Director

Reporting To: President (Chair of the Board of Directors)

Major Objectives

As a Director on the Board, provide clarity of purpose and mandate, financial oversight and strategic support for organizational sustainability.

Duties and Responsibilities

A board member of NPCC is elected by the membership of the Centre at an Annual General Meeting to serve a term of three (3) years – with the potential of serving a second term for a maximum of six (6) years. Board members are expected to contribute in four areas: 1) Stewardship, 2) funding strategy and revenue development; 3) data analysis; 4) community ambassador and champion.

Stewardship

  • Commit to support the Centre’s mission, vision and values;
  • Steward the organization by providing sound legal, procedural, and policy advisement;
  • Provide guidance and support in the development of “best practices” of policy development, program delivery and operational sustainability;
  • Invest time on a monthly basis to participate in a scheduled board meeting (and a committee of your choice), read all reports and materials in preparation for your meetings, and come to meetings prepared to engage;
  • Contribute to the overall strategic preparedness of the Centre by engaging in the annual strategic retreat planning process.

Funding Strategy and Revenue Development

  • Determine your commitment to a level of support – time, effort, money – each financial year; this includes timely payment of your annual membership dues and setting your support intentions for yearly contributions;
  • Develop and understand the regular budgets and financial reports by reading quarterly financial statements;
  • Offer insight and support to ensuring that the Centre is successful in achieving its financial goals of attracting a diversified stream of earned and contributed revenue.

Data Analysis

  • Data Collection & Cleaning: Gather, organize, and clean large datasets from various sources, ensuring data accuracy, consistency, and completeness for analysis.
  • Data Analysis & Interpretation: Use statistical techniques and data analysis tools to extract actionable insights and trends to support business decision-making.
  • Data Visualization & Reporting: Develop and maintain dashboards and reports using tools like Tableau, Power BI, or Excel to communicate findings effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Process Optimization: Identify areas for process improvements based on data-driven insights, recommending strategies for increased efficiency and performance.

Community Ambassador and Champion

  • Take a supportive leadership role for developing a robust community outreach plan that engages current and potential members throughout the community, listening and speaking to stakeholders.

Qualifications & Requirements

According to the NPCC By-law, board members need to be (or become) “individual members of NPCC, 18+ years of age, of sound mind and not subject to an undischarged bankruptcy.” Directors must “support the mandate of NPCC and bring management and leadership experience to sustain the centre.”

The NPCC strategic plan will benefit most from individuals who are skilled and comfortable with both leadership and management demands, accustomed to the unique values, programs and services delivered by a not-for-profit charitable community organization in the arts, and a capacity to work in a collaborative fashion. A strong board member should expect to be engaged directly and indirectly in the work of the Centre for up to 5 hours per month.

Orientation and Training

Once elected by the membership, Directors will be provided orientation and training to prepare them for their position. Each new member will be paired with an experienced member as part of a mentoring relationship.

Benefits

Directors may claim expenses directly associated with the governance responsibilities.
