NPCC is pleased to invite our community to this free adult workshop with Anishinaabe Artist and Special Guest Instructor Mark Seabrook of Twin Ravens Art. Mark will deliver an understanding of the Water Spirit as painted by Norval Morrisseau in compositions created throughout the 1960’s and 70’s. Seasonal change, safe travel in the Northwest of Ontario and the duality of good and evil are communicated by this strong image. The Water Spirit in the Anishinaabe tradition is depicted as a serpent and holds a geographically specific significance on Manitoulin Island. The serpent travels Lake Nipigon, Georgian Bay, Sagamok, The Spanish River and goes to old community places Perry Island, Cape Croker and through various reserves. It travels to Anishinaabe Nations: Timmins, Superior, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Lake Michigan and Midland, and goes up to the town of North Bay, East of Manitoulin before it returns home. The spirit is so big that when it came out from where it was hiding, it disrupted the river! – Learn more as you draw and paint this powerful image on approx. 18 x 30 canvas board. Morrisseau’s Water Spirit is now part of the collection of the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau, Quebec! All materials are included.
