In celebration of Asian History Month, California-based artist Elaine Chu leads an online session in Japanese book binding techniques that will be held at the centre with an in-studio assistant. Elaine will lead the class in projects using beautiful Washi papers to make basic books while sharing terminology and providing support as students discover the possibilities of unique methods, like the pamphlet-stitch, to sew a multi-signature book and more. Each participant will complete one book with the option to follow along as Elaine demonstrates a second smaller sewn pamphlet with a clever slot-and-tab closure. All levels are welcome and no previous experience is needed. Materials will be available for purchase at the Japanese Paper Place. Please see the NPCC website for the materials list.
