Many of the techniques I have acquired by trial and error and I feel I should pass the knowledge along’, says Sandy Cline. Although his studio is in the wilds of North Kawartha, Ontario, Sandy feels that the world is at his fingertips. Over the past many years, his work has travelled to almost every country in the world and his Soapstone sculptures have been used as awards and tokens of recognition for significant international-level achievements in Canadian sports and philanthropy. From long teaching stints at many art schools to exhibitions in Japan and France, Sandy’s art and method has influenced many artists. Take this wonderful two-day workshop opportunity to learn to carve Soapstone with Sandy at NPCC now, to learn from the best. The first stone is complementary and materials are provided for use during the class. Participants will be able to carve a variety of animal shapes and can select from some pre cut stone sizes to carve a dolphin or polar bear, for example. For the second class, participants are able to pre order stone form the instructor after leaning the basics and planning their next project. ‘You have to learn to work with the stone, if you try to force it into something it doesn’t want to be, it will break. You become one with the sculpture, and you can feel that it is right.’ For a materials list, please check our website.
