Learn traditional Indigenous decorative quill work techniques and a neck pouch construction method with Naomi Smith, an Artist, Maker and Educator from the Chippewas of Nawash Nation in Neyaashiinimiing. For over 25 years, Naomi has shared traditional teachings with various communities and groups. Her work focuses on the ways of the Indigenous people of the Great Lakes region from a historical and contemporary perspective, often through the story of beads and other culturally utilized materials. In this session, students will be guided step-by-step through the beautiful and authentic design process of embellishing a practical item with a design using porcupine quills. Naomi’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and is collected by both public art institutions and private collectors the world. A kit will be made available for purchase directly from the Naomi on the first day of the session. $58, cash accepted.
