Join this special and highly informative class on Projection Mapping with Maziar Ghaderi, Toronto-based multimedia artist, filmmaker, and specialist in creating immersive digital experiences through emerging technologies. For over a decade, Maziar has developed ground-breaking work that blends art and technology. His widely recognized projects are showcased across North America, Europe, and West Asia. Part 1: Basics of Projection Mapping Design Hands-on workshop that will teach students projection mapping using the node-based software Isadora (no coding required). Projection mapping is the warping of visual content onto physical objects such as floors, buildings, walls and furniture effectively turning surfaces into screens. This workshop is designed for all ages, and levels and is geared towards students who are interested in environment or theatre design, or multimedia production for live stage events. Students will learn how to: 1) Articulate, develop, and execute a raw idea from inception to an actionable and innovative new media installation 2) Perform rapid prototyping assess physical surfaces for the best visual output. 3) Projection map their selected images and videos onto 3D physical surfaces. 4) Build a live sound or live video as a trigger to actuate media with user-friendly node-based software Isadora (no coding required). 5) Learn the basics of GPU codecs, ideal for multiple simultaneous playback in a real-time environment. For a material list, please check our website. Part 2: Projection Mapping + Live Performance. This portion of the course teaches students to customize graphical content (video, image) and then map this content onto physical 3D objects using Isadora, a user-friendly node-based graphic programming software. Students will have the opportunity to put these techniques to use by workshopping with local performers to realize a DIY projection mapping show featuring live art. Students will learn how to: 1) Learn best practices for digital augmentation in a physical world, projection art, principles of light, colour theory and interaction design. 2) Make digital content your own through filters, compositing, special effects, editing, masking, keying. 3) Map customized images and videos onto 3D surfaces and develop manual & live input as actuators. 4) Learn to articulate and execute a raw idea from inception to a real-world exhibition 5) Deliver an innovative and sustainable production in collaboration with performing artists.
