How to Make Specialty Papers

Friday, May 1 to Friday, May 8, 2026
1:00 pm – 4:00 pm
Sessions: 2 Fridays
Instructor: Heidi Breier
Level: Beginner
Location: At Centre

The first part of this beginner-friendly workshop, will be a hands-on session of basic papermaking techniques as well as a window into the fascinating history and science of the craft. Once all students have pulled their first sheets, they will experiment with embossing, laminating, and adding inclusions, to make their paper even more unique! In part two of the session, students will dive deeper into handmade, recycled paper and discover its powerful connection to plants, through plant dyes and dried plant inclusions. They will also enjoy laminating and embossing with plant materials collected from around the centre or brought from home. The class will also experiment with larger sheets and stencils to create other paper shapes. While employed as a presenter at the Ontario Science Centre, Heidi Breier honed her hands-on papermaking skills and since 2015 has been sharing her knowledge with people of all ages. All materials are included.
