Involving the Past

March 24 to April 11, 2026

Location:  Emergence Gallery

Presented by: Patricia Mingala

Involving the Past showcases the topic around lingering feelings from one’s memories. More specifically, the feelings from core memories. A “circle” has been an important aspect to her life as it is a shape that creates comfort and fulfillment. Circles don’t require much energy to create and it’s infinite, which resonates with the theme of memories being constantly created without notice. Taking a landscape approach, she used patterns, colours, and textures to create a fantastical landscape that showcases a small creature collecting memories under a radiating sky that connects one’s own being to such memories.

By using techniques such as impasting, scraping, stippling, dripping, as well as experimenting with gradients, layering, texture, and dry brush approaches she is adding depth to the storytelling experience and attention to the importance of circles being more than a shape but a way of reliving, remembering and experiencing memories.

About the Artist

Patricia Mingala is a multi-disciplinary Toronto based artist focussing on themes of identity within her family and Colombian/Filipino culture. In 2025, Mingala graduated from OCAD University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Drawing and Painting. Mingala commissioned a mural at Bathurst and Lawrence walk-in clinic in Toronto, which created a welcoming environment for patients in 2020.

Mingala approaches her art practice with a foundation of experimenting and incorporating mixed media and collage techniques. She finds this important as she ties the use of non-traditional material to her childhood and present observations in her life. Accessible materials also play a big role in Mingala’s practice as it challenges her to implement new use to everyday materials. Part of commercial galleries within Toronto, Colombia and Philippines is something Mingala looks forward to as she continues her art career.
