Welcome to the Hook and I Exhibition
Rug Hooking is an old craft – craft being a utilitarian piece of art. Back in the day, people created rugs from old clothes and blankets to not only warm up the floors but also to decorate their living spaces. It was a great creative pursuit that had a practical purpose.
Today rug hooking is still a great creative purpose but not always with a practical purpose! Often it is the art than matters more than have a warm rug for the floor! That said, rugs are still made and put to good use but so are pillows, bags, wall hangings and pictures.
On display in this show is a wide range of styles and work by the members of the Etobicoke Rugcrafters; a resident group of Neilson Park Creative Centre. The artists participating in this show have a wide range of experience – from (well) over 25 years to less than 1 year. The work includes original pieces as well as interpretations of patterns from rug hooking designers.
Rather than old clothes, the pieces are worked in wool fabric – custom dyed or off the bolt textures – and yarn. Many incorporate other fabrics such as sari silk, velvet, and wool locks, as well as recycled clothing. You will see the traditional pulled loops in the pieces as well as quillies, standing wool, and proddy techniques.|
We hope you enjoy these beautiful pieces of art.
All are welcome at the annual Gathering on Tuesday, October 6 from 10 am to 3 pm. Admission is $10 at the door. Includes, vendors, prizes, refreshment, speaker, silent auction and inspiration!
