Origami: Formal, Practical and Decorative

Tuesday, October 13 to Tuesday, October 20, 2026
9:30 am – 12:30 pm
Sessions: 2 Tuesdays
Instructor: Shuichi
Level: Beginner
Location: At Centre

Origami has its roots in both formal paper-folding etiquette and practical ways of wrapping objects. It is said to have developed from practices such as folding paper with special meanings for Shinto/Buddhism rituals, folding official documents, and wrapping objects before gradually becoming a form of play, craft, and creative expression. We also continue to fold things in small ways in everyday life. For example, at a restaurant, people may fold a chopstick wrapper into a small chopstick rest. After finishing a carton of milk, we fold it down so it takes up less space in the garbage. We also make small tabletop trash boxes from old flyers or scrap paper. In the first half of this workshop, participants will learn about the origins of origami and try some practical origami ideas used in everyday life. In the second half, they will learn to makes simple, cute, and beginner-friendly projects like flowers, or animals, or for a more modern or seasonal direction, Halloween-themed origami!
