Originating in Europe, expressionist artists rejected traditional realism and academic art and instead utilized abstract forms, bold colour, and strong energetic brush work. They were seeking a pictorial form which could express their innermost feelings rather than represent the external world, which resulted in works charged with power and passion. In this class, participants will be inspired to create expressionist art by exploring the works of early painters, observing elements of technique, colour use and symbolism. Students will be prompted to recognize and express the human condition in their work by creating visual relationships between emotional and psychological states and colour, texture, and technique. Social, political, and historical commentary in art will also be explored as the evolution of expressionism is a rich subject. This class will focus on artists from Europe to North America to the NYC school introducing abstract expressionism, to Neo Expressionism and Contemporary Expressionism. Instructor Steve Rose, MFA will offer plenty of support in this course that will not disappoint. For a materials list, please check our website.
