“Healing is nothing but a lessening of the objective confinement.”
Kenneth G. Mills, Artist and Musician (1923–2004)
“Is art outside of us? Perhaps our inner colourful nature is being expressed in what we see.”
Terry R. Stevens, Artist and Musician
This show is designed to present a convergence of art and music, creating an environment for healing while lessening the objective confinement.
In 2013, Terry Stevens suffered a major stoke, spending weeks in the ICU. He vividly recalls being confronted with a decision to live or die. He recovered, gaining the ability to speak and walk despite a negative prognosis. His recovery was inspired by love, prayer, gratitude, music, rhythm, beauty, humour, and knowing that creativity transcends the suggestion of an ailing body. Terry always acknowledges and lives by the example shown to him by his mentor, Kenneth G. Mills.
In speaking of his work, Terry says, “I paint for the inspiration that is seen, felt, and heard through my inner and outer journey of creative expression. I love to share what I have gleaned by asking, ‘How can I capture the
feeling of nature, the love of language, and freedom of music on canvas?’” Terry’s canvases are always carefully composed, placement of shape is an important feature, and his use of colour is clear. Through his abstract work Terry explores the nature of energy and the inner and outer realms. His abstracts draw upon his mastery of faux finishes, which he pursued professionally for over 10 years. His work features harmony and rhythm, informed by his long successful career as a vocalist and drummer.
Through use of vivid colour, negative space, scale, and challenging perspective the canvases of Kenneth G. Mills offer opportunity for discovery. His canvases challenge assumptions and provoke surprise. Canadian artist Timothy Phillips, a long-time associate of Salvador Dalí, observed that the canvases are “full of metaphysical hints, hidden the way Dalí hides them.” A highly accomplished musician, Mills displays in his canvases a deep appreciation of the musical nature.
Kenneth G. Mills was asked about the comparative value of music (both vocal and instrumental) and visual art. His provocative answer provides the vision for this show:
“The voice, in essence, is not a sound. The Voice is the greatest art of the Soundless… Each one in an audience, walking through a gallery, who hears the Voice becomes part of the invisible Tapestry of attention, and the impregnation of the Sound weaves its own imaginary lines for your own witnessing and approval.”
