Layers of Emotion

March 3 to March 21, 2026

Location:  Emergence Gallery

Presented by: Selin Celebi

Selin Celebi’s work explores the intersections of fundamental emotions such as love, anger, fear, joy, and curiosity, through abstract forms and layered textures.

She uses acrylics, grids, scribbles, and spontaneous marks to give voice to emotions that often resist verbal expression. Each canvas becomes both a diary and a mirror: a diary of her inner states, and a mirror in which viewers may recognize their own.

Her aim is not to offer answers but to create an open field for emotional resonance. The process of layering, erasing, and re-working parallels the way emotions overlap and transform in human life. In this sense, her paintings invite viewers to linger with ambiguity, to sense what lies beneath the surface, and to discover the power of emotions as shared human infrastructure.

About the Artist

Selin Çelebi is a Turkish-born, Toronto-based abstract painter. With a background in Chemistry (BSc) and Polymer Science (PhD), she brings a research-driven approach to the textures and materials of her paintings. Since moving to Canada, she has focused on translating complex emotional states into layered, vibrant abstractions. Her work has been exhibited in a group show Arts Etobicoke (2025), and selected for city-wide cultural events such as Lumen Toronto.

Selin’s practice bridges science and art: she explores the material qualities of paint while engaging with psychological and emotional depth. Her paintings have been recognized for their strong compositional rhythm and expressive surface language. Beyond the studio, Selin actively shares her work on Instagram @selincelebi_art and is building her presence in Toronto’s contemporary art scene. She currently lives and works in North York, where she continues to develop a body of work that maps the terrain of emotion in visual form.
