Freestitch Machine Embroidery Art with Saskia Wassing

Saturday, January 30, 2027
10:00 am – 3:00 pm
Sessions: 1 Saturday
Instructor: Saskia Wassing
Level: All Levels
Location: At Centre

Using a regular sewing machine, this workshop will help you develop the techniques and skills required to use your basic domestic sewing machine for free-machine embroidery (also known as free motion embroidery). This method allows you to use the machine freely as a drawing tool, creating marks and textures with fabric and thread. A series of exploratory technical samples will be created and various applications will be explored, including cutwork, appliqué, quilting and creating fabric with thread. We will also be looking at colour, pattern, texture, and image, playing with the many possibilities. Ideas on how to source and develop individual work will be discussed, with the opportunity for expert critique and help from the instructor. Emphasis is on developing your personal skills at your own pace. This class is suitable for beginners and those who wish to further develop their domestic sewing machine skills. Participants are required to bring their own sewing machines in good working order, plus an embroidery or darning foot. For a full materials list, please check our website.
